International experts in milk, nutrition, genomics and bioinformatics will gather in Belgium next month to discuss worldwide efforts in milk-specific genomic research and to set future agendas for the International Milk Genomics Consortium.
The two-and-a-half-day event, to be held Sept. 19-21 at the Hilton Brussels, is a joint effort by the California Dairy Research Foundation (CDRF) and the International Dairy Federation (IDF).
The goals of the International Milk Genomics Consortium are leveraging existing resources for the assembly of genetic instructions for milk molecules, sharing current research to foster a better understanding of the biological values of milk, creating tools for an interactive Web data exchange, coordination of future precompetitive research to develop baseline data and providing a foundation for the development of exclusive/competitive research.
This year’s event marks the third time the conference has been held, attracting researchers from more than 15 countries around the world.
The 2006 event will open with addresses by Joseph O’Donnell, executive director of the California Dairy Research Foundation; Christian Robert, director general of the International Dairy Federation; and Bruce German, Ph.D., of the University of California at Davis.
Scheduled topics include:
- Biology of mammalian lactation
- Regulation of milk synthesis
- Diversity of milk genetics
- Milk proteins
- Milk genomics and proteomics
- Transcriptional control of normal mammary function
- Milk genomics and peptides
- Structural designs of milk proteins
- Oligosaccharides and glycopeptides in milk
